MY BIO

Percussionist Marissa Brown is a creative and enthusiastic advocate for all styles of music. As a pianist and singer she has performed with many different ensembles throughout high school and all around her community. She has also taught private piano and guitar lessons, and in her spare time she loves songwriting. Marissa is not only a musician and percussionist, but also loves to sing, act, and create other art, such as photography, drawing, and poetry. Since she came to Southern Utah University she has embraced every opportunity to perform and collaborate as a percussionist. She is an active member of the Percussion Ensembles, Orchestra, Concert Choir, Wind Symphony, and Drumline. She has performed as a soloist for her Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior Recitals and as a competitor for the Utah Day of Percussion where she most recently won a 1st place award. She was part of the featured ensemble for the Utah Music Educators Association in 2012, as well as a teacher for various outreach events in Utah. Last year, Marissa was chosen as Southern Utah University’s performer of the year playing guitar and singing. Marissa is a Music Performance Major and has enjoying being an ArtsBridge scholar and teaching at North Elementary in Cedar City, UT. Marissa served as the President of the NAfME program and the Percussion Club program at Southern Utah University, organizing many events and recruiting others to make music a career. Marissa hopes one day to travel with her playing and provide communication avenues and learn from other musical cultures around the world. While recently studying music technology and online avenues to share creative projects, she has started working on a solo album that will release sometime in the next year. She is currently in her 4th year of study in the Percussion program at Southern Utah University under Dr. Lynn Vartan.
